Welcome! I'm Carla, the designer and maker behind Quimera Atelier. The "official" definition of Quimera (chimera) is
(in Greek mythology) a fire-breathing female monster with a lion's head, a goat's body, and a serpent's tail.
a thing that is hoped or wished for but in fact is illusory or impossible to achieve.
While the fire-breathing monster may conjure frightening images for some, to me it means all the different pieces and facets of our personality that make us women who we are: mothers, wives, professionals, creatives, friends... some fire-breathing power would definitely come in handy on some occasions, wouldn't you agree?
And I like the idea of always having something to wish for - even if it's illusory.
I'm European but have lived in Africa for many years, and I'm inspired both by my upbringing in a small quaint European country with a homogeneous population and traditional beliefs, and my life in the wide and colorful continent of Africa. Its boldness inspires me to make pieces that stand out, that are colorful, and that bring together components from different places of the world. Where they meet and how beautifully they work together is more important to me than were they originate from. And I love working with metal! It's wonderful taking a piece of silver or copper that is cold, flat and hard and transform it beyond recognition into different shapes, with color and movement.
I am mostly self- taught, although I've had the good fortune to take workshops with some amazing artists, and I'm constantly learning and pushing my boundaries. I hoard materials and can hold them for years until they find that "exact" spot where they belong. Each piece is handmade by me in my studio in Mozambique, with my two cats keeping watch.
I am a wife and a mother; I have a day job. And I have this dream job.
